Internet Addiction Disorder experts warn it's a real and a growing problem around the world.

People who are addicted to the Internet don't simply use it a lot. Instead, they stay logged on so much that the Internet use disrupts their lives

In a new study, researchers found that people with Internet addiction had differences in their brains that could be linked to this problem. They included 17 teenagers who met the definition of Internet addiction, and another 16 who didn't

The researchers used an MRI scanner to measure everyone's white matter, which is a type of brain tissue.

The teens with Internet addiction had problems in parts of the brain that are involved in feeling emotions, controlling thoughts, making decisions, and paying attention. These findings show that Internet addiction may involve the same processes in the brain as drug addiction!

Some warning signs of Internet addiction include:

  • Trouble turning your thoughts away from the Internet when you're not online.
  • Needing to use the Internet more and more
  • Feeling depressed or irritable when you cut back on your Internet time
  • And spending so much time online that it threatens your job, grades, or relationships.
